5 Fall Singable Stories for Preschool Circle Time

If you took a peek inside my music therapy bag, you’d almost always find a singable story in there! It’s one of my favorite ways to end a session (just before the goodbye song). We’ve moved, danced, explored instruments or movement props, and now it’s time to end on a calming note—with a story, a singable one to keep the music flowing. Here are a few of my fall favorites:

It’s Fall by Renee Kurilla

  • This one explores so many wonders of the season—from cozying up for chillier weather with scarves and fuzzy socks to jumping in leaves, Halloween fun, and Thanksgiving! I absolutely love the vibrant, sweet illustrations too. This rhyming text works beautifully with the tune Up On the Housetop.

We're Going on a Leaf Hunt by Steve Metzger

ree

  • A playful spin-off of the classic Going on a Bear Hunt, this story takes children on an autumn adventure through crunchy leaves and nature’s wonders. The rhyming, rhythmic text makes it easy to chant or sing along. If you’d like some follow-up songs and activities for this one, my Leaf Activity Pack has you covered.

Spooky Wheel on the Bus by J. Elizabeth Mills

  • Set to the classic tune we know and love, this story invites kids to do the actions along with the story. Each page introduces a new creature on the bus, making it fun and interactive. It also reinforces counting, with each page offering one more silly monster, wacky witch, or funny critter.

Thank A Lot by Raffi

  • Based on Raffi’s classic song, this story celebrates gratitude in a gentle, singable way. It’s perfect for winding down after an active session while encouraging children to notice and give thanks for the little things around them. Pair it with the coloring page from my Leaf & Gratitude Pack for a simple follow-up activity. For more ideas on using this story, check out this blog post where I go into more detail.

The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin by Sonali Fry

  • A sweet, rhythmic story perfect for littler ones, following a tiny pumpkin’s adventure. Its simple, repetitive text is easy to sing along with and is also set to a familiar tune (The Itsy Bitsy Spider). Pass around a small pumpkin to pair with the story.
