Room on the Broom: 3 Preschool Music Activities.
Room on the Broom was one of the first books my twin daughters were gifted when they were just wee, and we’ve enjoyed it ever since. And many other Julia Donaldson books too!
There’s no shortage of excitement and adventure in this story, from new animal friends joining the broom to the broom snapping in two, the mean dragon, the potion, and the brand-new “truly magnificent broom” that perfectly fits everyone on board.
It’s a fun story to get out in October, but really, any time of year! I wanted to create a pack of song activities that could act as a companion to the story and explore some of its themes. Let’s explore the songs!
1. Zoom, Zoom, Zoom (Witch and Broom Version)
This is a spin-off of the classic “Zoom, Zoom, Zoom” song, but instead of climbing aboard a rocket ship, we’ll climb aboard a broomstick.
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We’re flying past the moon
Far, far, far
We’re flying through the stars
If you want to take a trip,
Climb aboard my broomstick
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We’re flying past the moon
Children can pretend they are flying on a broomstick like the witch in the story. To make the connection even stronger, I created a rocking broom printable where kids can try to remember the order in which the animals joined the broom. Afterward, it can be used as a visual during the song.

2. Witch Feelings (Tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”)
She’s flying on her broom
She’s flying on her broom
The witch feels (happy) when
She’s flying on her broom
Add in different scenarios from the story and invite children to share how the witch might feel. For added fun and a visual element, kids can help spin the witch feelings wheel.

This is a simple way to explore emotions through music and play-based learning.
3. Alphabet Potion
And my favorite part of the book… when they throw the ingredients into the cauldron and out comes the “truly magnificent broom”!
This time, you’ll use letters of the alphabet for the ingredients and see what they turn into! Sing or chant a simple song, add a letter, sound it out, and see what it becomes (something that begins with the chosen letter).
Mix the potion all around
Add a letter, make its sound
Stirring, stirring, almost done
What will it become?
Here’s an example of the song in action in the video below!
Enjoy these songs on their own, or if you’d like the accompanying visuals, you can find them in my Room on the Broom Song Companion Pack.

Hope you have fun bringing a little musical magic into your classroom with these preschool music activities to complement a fantastic story!
