Would You Rather for Preschool & Kindergarten: A Fun Musical Circle Time Activity

If you've ever played, Would You Rather? or This or That — giving kids a choice between two silly or imaginative questions — you'll know how engaging it can be.

I love how versatile it is, too. You might pull it out when you're waiting and need a quick time-filler, use it as a simple icebreaker, or turn to it as an easy way to get a group talking and connecting at the start of the day.

I decided to see what would happen if I turned it into a full circle time activity with a musical spin for 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds.

I had planned to do just a few rounds, but we ended up stretching the activity out because the kids were having so much fun choosing, sharing their answers, and seeing what their friends would pick.

Why Kids Love Would You Rather

The thing I love about this kind of activity is that it provides a simple way to get children involved and having fun. There is structure to it, with two clear choices and no right or wrong answer. Children get to share their ideas, listen to what their peers choose, and connect with each other while having fun with silly and imaginative questions.

Turning Would You Rather into a Circle Time Activity

I started wondering how I could turn those simple questions into a more interactive circle time experience — and, of course, add some music along the way.

Here’s how we played:

1. Choose your question

First, I held up a large Would You Rather card showing the two picture choices and read the question aloud.

Would you rather hop to school like a kangaroo or swing to school like a monkey?

2. Set up the choices

Next, I placed the two separate picture choices on the ground, each inside its own circle. I used carpet mats, but you could easily use hula hoops or simply place the two pictures on the floor next to each.

3. Add a little music!

Then we tapped our knees and sang (or chanted):

🎵 What will Julie’s choice be?

Come and choose a circle, then we will see! 🎵

When it was their turn, the chosen child came up and stood on the circle with the picture they chose.

You can easily change the words depending on how you're setting up your choices. For example, if you're simply placing the pictures on the floor, you could sing, “Come and choose a picture, then we will see!”

4. Get everyone involved

After the child made their choice, I brought everyone else into the activity:

“Raise your hand if you would also want to hop to school like a kangaroo”

“Raise your hand if you would rather swing to school like a monkey!”

This gave everyone a chance to make their own choice, even when it wasn't their turn to come up.

5. Keep it going!

We repeated the activity with new picture choices, giving different children a turn to come up and choose each time.

Ways to Adapt the Activity

There are different ways to adapt this activity depending on the size of your group, the time you have, and how much movement you want to include.

For a quick version, especially with a larger group, children can make their choice right from their spots. Have them hold up one finger for the first choice and two fingers for the second choice. You could also have them use a simple movement for each answer.

This is an easy option when you only have a few minutes or want to get everyone involved at once.

Act it out:

Invite children to act out the choice they made. If they chose kangaroo, they might hop on the spot; if they chose monkey, they might move like a monkey.

A Ready-to-Use Circle Time Activity

I've put together a ready-to-use printable version of the activity with 30 Would You Rather questions for young children.

The set includes full page question pages with picture choices, cut-apart cards, and an instruction page with the musical chant and activity directions — so you have everything ready to print and use with your group.

I hope you and your group have as much fun with this activity as we did! It was such a simple way to connect, interact, and have a few laughs along the way!
