Looking for fun and engaging egg and bird-themed activities for preschool? Last spring, I discovered a delightful book during a library visit with my kids that quickly became a favorite in my preschool music sessions. It's called Ten Little Eggs by Jess Mikhail, and it’s a perfect springboard for a variety of preschool egg activities, bird songs, and circle time ideas.
In this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite ways to bring this theme to life through music, movement, and creative play—perfect for spring, Easter, or any time you want to add a little seasonal fun to your classroom!
Ten Little Eggs Singable Picture Book
The lovely book is about a mother bird who is wondering “What in the world will (her) little eggs be?” One by one, the eggs hatch into a diverse bunch creatures that come together to make a big happy family — a cute and heartwarming celebration of togetherness. Below is a snippet of the book, adapted into a singable story set to a familiar tune.
Egg Activities to Complement the Singable Book:
Bring the story to life with a fun, hands-on activity that helps kids engage with the book through movement and counting. As you read or sing the story, children can count and place plastic Easter eggs or shaker eggs into a nest, matching the events in the book. This simple tactile activity supports early math skills and fine motor development while adding a playful, sensory element to your egg-themed preschool lesson.
You can create a cozy nest by bunching up colorful scarves and tucking the eggs inside. It’s a great way to tie in spring circle time activities with a favorite singable story—perfect for music time, centers, or small group learning.

“What’s in the Egg?” is a great little song activity that extends the themes of the story. Place small toy creatures in plastic Easter eggs, sing the simple song, and children can learn about animals that hatch from eggs versus those that do not.
Egg Shaker Songs for Preschool Circle Time
Now it’s time to shake, rattle, and roll with some fun egg shaker songs that are perfect for preschoolers! These interactive songs get little ones moving, listening, and engaging with rhythm and sound—ideal for music time or circle time fun.
Here are a few egg shaker favorites to try with your group:
I Know a Chicken by Laurie Berkner - A high-energy shaker egg song that kids absolutely love!
2. Shake Your Shakers Slowly by Kathy Reid Naiman -Great for exploring tempo and self-regulation.
3. Egg Shaking Song for Primary Colors by Nancy Stewart -A fun way to combine color recognition with musical play.
4. Humpty Dumpty by Jiggle Jam - A playful twist on a familiar rhyme, complete with balancing shaker eggs and then letting them fall!
These egg shaker music activities are easy to add to your spring, Easter, or bird-themed sessions—and guaranteed to get kids smiling and moving!
Bird and Egg Music and Movement
But wait—there’s more! Songs that encourage pretend play are incredibly engaging for young children and help support creativity, self-expression, and gross motor skills. I love “Here’s a Little Bird” by Susan Salidor where little ones can let their imaginations soar as they pretend to be a bird hatching from an egg and learning to fly.
It’s a beautiful way to weave in movement, music, and storytelling—perfect for preschool music time or any bird-themed activity!
Little Chick Hide and Seek Rhyme
This fun little rhyming activity comes from my Egg and Bird Activity Pack (find it here!). After hiding the chick, recite this rhyme together:
Little Chick, little chick
Soft and round
Behind which egg,
Can you be found?
Children can then take turns guessing which color egg they think the chick is hiding behind. This playful guessing game supports color recognition, turn-taking, and listening skills—and adds a sweet surprise element to your circle time.
The activity pack includes everything you need to set this up, along with a variety of extension activities to keep the learning going. Kiddos can trace Easter egg lines, color birds, count eggs in nests, or get creative with a basket-themed play dough mat. It’s a simple and fun way to weave in early literacy, fine motor, and counting practice with a spring theme ideas!
